The Museum of Modern Love Heather Rose Books

It took me a while to read this one, as I didn't want to rush it. The different characters whose lives intersected at the museum were an interesting mix, and I did get quite caught up with some of their lives - at times fuming - but that's not a bad thing. Central to the book is of course Marina Abramovic and her performance art. Amazing. I kept stopping to look things up, including the video of this performance. I wasn't a huge fan of the mystical/magical elements but I ignored them and still enjoyed what the book had to offer.

The Museum of Modern Love Heather Rose Books Reviews

This book is simply wonderful. Heather Rose has done something remarkable in this exquisitely constructed, erudite and passionate novel. It is a tour de force from an Australian writer at the top of her game.
Outstanding reading !
It inspired me to watch many of marina abramovic 's works and interviews on YouTube. The mixture of truth and fiction is brilliantly done. Am so pleased a friend recommended the book to me. Would hate to have missed it.
I am biased here admittedly, not because I have any connection to the performance artist at the center of the novel, but because I continue to write about the portraits of Larry Stanton as if I had known him, known his sitters, been in the studio while he drew or painted. The justification is that many of the sitters are now unknowns, so I am giving them back a presence, a life. So here the author has had notes, facts, but then let herself imagine, which is when art writes about art.
This is an amazing story. Incredibly different and so poignant. The subject is new,and fresh. The characters are great to just plain "folks". Since I read it, the book still lingers in my mind. I thought it was brilliant!
I was truly entranced by this book and how it was transformed from a memoir to a novel. While there are many intriguing levels, I found myself most often searching for my own definition of Art. “Art is the addition or subtraction of something from what we perceive that allows and permits people to correspond in a new or different way”.
In Heather Rose’s novel THE MUSEUM OF MODERN LOVE real-life artist Marina Abramović’s performance at the MoMA is set as the back-drop for a fictional composer and the people he encounters in the daily crowds at the museum. Do they become part of the exhibit or are they simply bystanders?

Rose adeptly delivers Abramović’s persona through the pages and the intensity of her work through the character’s reactions and dramatic emotional responses as they gather to line up to observe who will be seated across from her each day – gazing into her eyes for what? Clarity, longing, wish fulfillment, or perhaps something so mundane, we’ve missed the point.

Love abounds in THE MUSEUM OF MODERN LOVE.
Marina Abramovic's performance The Artist is Present, caused something of a furore and almost a stampede to be part of it when it took place, this book provides an other aspect of her performance, the ripples that extend out from the moments Ms Abramovic sits and gazes at individuals day after day. The matrix of looking and being part of this performance creates a network of ongoing traces and each person who sees her perform ends up being intrinsic to that creation. Heather Rose has recognized some of these traces and set them lose outside the performance. This is engrossing and gentle and really adds another layer of understanding and response to the originating work.
