Politics and the Novel Irving Howe Books

Irving Howe was one of the few Socialists who could write excellent Lit Crit. Unlike Raymond Williams and Terry Eagleton, to pick on two fellow travelers, he didn't allow his political convictions to blur his literary insights. Williams on Orwell is a good example of not being able to see the literary wood for the ideological trees, and Eagleton's prose is too often clotted and abstract and tendentious and etc.

Howe's chapters on James and Conrad are well worth the full price of the book, but he's also good on Stendhal, a writer notoriously difficult to pin down politically. He doesn't make me want to rush out and reread Malraux or Silone, but I have to get a copy of DARKNESS AT NOON very soon to see what I've missed. Highly recommended.
