Tried this free book over others because of its unique setting. It far surpassed my expectations. I got a triple whammy for my (no) money: 1) the plot/characters were outstanding and held me from the beginning; 2) a wonderful opportunity to delve into the inscrutable oriental mind; and 3) a wonderful study of "Chinglish." An avid lifetime reader (and I am handicapped here because my kindle keyboard does not include a COMMA) I have a love and a passion for the English language (COMMA) especially its written form. Reading a product description or instructions translated from another language can be aggravating (C) but trying to read a poorly translated novel is like hitting a speed bump every 10 feet when you just want to get down the road. This novel is very well written and will hold you to the last page.Product details

The story shows how some of the people did not want change to happen, that they thought change would ruin the old way of life and bring disrespect to their elders.
this was an interesting book if you want to know about conditions in contemporary China, the life of a language teacher, or how it feels to be a Chinese detective. I enjoyed it all the way through, though I got lost in the plot a few times.
China is a mystery to most Americans. We know about it, but we don't know it. I hope the author truly knows China. If he did he presented a good mystery with good insights into China. If he truly doesn't know China, the book is still a good mystery. I hope the former is true.
This was a good book. I recommend it if you like involved plots in mysteries and thrillers. The main detective was super smart in this story.
GD has written a modern mystery which takes place in China. A murder occurs and a detective is called to assist with the contact to the American Embassy. The murder is an American. Then a second is murdered. As the detective proceeds with the investigation, but is blocked. This is a murder that reaches high into the government. This is an excellent read for the genre..... ER
I gave this 3 stars because it was an ok read. By that I mean just ok not great. The writer tended to preach too much about 'Chinglish' and put a perspective on .foreigners' (as the Chinese call us) views about Chinese English that is not true in my experience. Having attended university with many Chinese I was impressed with their knowledge of English rather than looking down on them for grammar. Outsideof university I have never heard any disparaging of Chinese so it did not ring true. Also, the author's preaching on Chinese English, although an interesting view, detracted from the flow of the plot. So, I found it a light weight about a Chinese murder mystery and not in the same league as Qiu Xiaolong's Inspector Chen of the Shanghai police, murder mysteries.
Does the language we 'think' in really define who we are. As a 'white American' living in an Asian country i found this to be a fascinating story..Add in the 'Westernized' Chinese detective and the changes China is going through and I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Long ago I learned that, just because someone else has a different viewpoint than I do doesn't make them, or me, wrong. We can both be right. The skillful way this story is told allows for some deep thought on the part of the reader. Allowing that this is fiction and quite a bit of literary license is used, I still believe I grew some by the experience of reading the book.
