A MURDER IN TIME, A TWIST IN TIME and CAUGHT IN TIME by Julie McElwain are cuts above the typical sadistic thrillers. By this, I don’t mean that there is more sadism. I mean that the mystery is refreshing (not sweetly juvenile or heavy), informative (not mindless), engrossing (not tedious…never tedious). The author’s characters are not nondescript stick figures; they are well-rounded and believable.Kendra is 21st century FBI, born genetically superior in ability and knowledge, she is self-reliant, composed in stressful situations, alert, and quick thinking. Traveling back to the Regency Period (200 years in the past) is not what’s on her mind when following a lead, but tracks her murderers without the aid of a modern-day forensic lab, sets up her own procedure for investigation, and creates a war room to analyze the evidence wherever she finds murder.
Although she tries to keep things as procedurally normal as possible while collecting evidence, her biggest challenges come in learning how 1800s society views women and men, marriage, social status, women’s rights, and personal freedom. She must get used to the language without giving herself away, and this proves disturbing because she’s blunt, earthy, and typically American. The author’s research to get period speak correct draws a sharp distinction between Kendra’s 21st century and 1800s Regency England.
Kendra certainly has the edge on those she meets…well, almost. She can’t depend on her deadly GLOCK to get her out of scrapes; instead, she must rely on a small, easy to conceal pistol with an accuracy of 15 feet, but this is no ordinary woman. She was born of genetically gifted parents, exhibiting her own superior genetics and extra sensory perception, an orderly mind and a gift for observation and detail.
I wish the publisher had included the author's website address - I'd like to see MORE of this time travel series. The idea is fresh and plots vary, but there will always be a body or two. If readers want to follow Kendra's adventures, begin with the first book, A MURDER IN TIME, and try to imagine yourself in her challenging predicament if you are a female reader. I don’t think many of us would survive our first 15 minutes…then, again, we aren’t as talented as Kendra.

Caught in Time
This series can be categorized with a visualization of one circle overlapping a number of concentric circles.
Each of the concentric circles is one of the murder mysteries told in their respective volumes. The one overlapping circle is Kendra Donavan’s story of an FBI agent propelled back in time.
She is stuck in the 19th century without knowledge of how to return. However, she applies her detective skills to solve crimes in that era. It seems that as the story progresses with additional volumes the concentric circles stay the same size. However, the overlapping circle diminishes.
This because her story of an FBI agent stuck in a different time has became stagnated. It’s not developed. Therefore, the novelty of the novel is losing its luster.
This is slightly disappointing because my curiosity as to the resolution to her extraordinary situation is a matter of great interest.
The story’s progression not addressing this issue seems to indicate that the author is only using Kendra predicament to tell the actual mysteries in the concentric circles. This is because she wants a modern-day detective to solve these crimes without the tools that would ordinarily be afforded to such a figure. Frustrating. I’m contemplating giving her four stars. But I haven’t finished the book yet.
So far the mystery is engaging. But, the benefit of a novel is that in most instances you know three things. One, is that the killer will be discovered unlike in real life because the books popularity would be diminished otherwise. Secondly, the killer is usually one of the people upon whom the author spends the most time rather then some random stand-in filler in the story. Thirdly, the killer is a surprise to the reader. Otherwise, the story would be ordinary.
Therefore, at this point which is about 50% into the book my number one suspect is Mrs. Stone. Don’t have any concrete proof or a slate board. But that’s my feeling at the moment.
I take back everything I wrote now that I’ve finished the book. But, I don’t regret writing it either. That’s all I have to say on the matter.
As far as who did it. I failed in guessing.
There was a time when I told myself that I didn't like books that include time travel. Then I discovered author, Julie McElwin's books about Kendra Donovan, FBI agent, who finds herself transported back to Regency England. The stories in this series somehow manage to seem plausible to the reader, and unfold what life was like in the past in a realistic manner. This story once again has a good story, actually, it has a couple of well-developed plot-lines. Most of the main characters found in the first two stories are once again found in this book too. There is an interesting twist of plot regarding the villain at the end of the book that I won't reveal (although I think astute readers might guess at his secret). Another plot-line involves the treatment of wives during this time period that is both based on 'the truth of the time' and continuing to be timely for our days as well. Most of the action of the book moves along at a steady pace, although I did think it lagged a bit more in the middle than the first two books did, but the ending of the book is suspenseful, thoughtful, and gives the readers of the series glimpses into possible events for new books in the series. I like the Kendra Donovan books and recommend them for their good plots, and well realized characters. I do think it's best to read them in order Murder in Time; Twist in Time; Caught in Time.
