The concept of this book was absolutely something which caught my eye and made me want to read it. That's why the 3.5 rating. Unfortunately the execution of several elements kept me from rounding that rating up to four stars. It's really difficult for me to completely enjoy a novel if I don't like the main character of the story. That is what happened here and while this is an entirely subjective element, it meant that I could never warm up to Aurora McCain and by extension, the book as a whole. When an author spends so much time having a character proclaim her intrepidness, her strength, her ability to do everything completely and totally by herself it makes for an uncomfortable situation when the character proves that she is, after all, simply human like the rest of us.
As a sketch artist for the police department Rory should have been extremely aware of proper procedures in any type of evidence gathering. The way this career law enforcement officer handled possible evidence in a murder case was incredibly awful. Surely in a mystery novel where the protagonist is using department personnel and equipment to interpret clues the chain of evidence should have been followed more closely. I realize it is fiction, but that aspect was not well written in my opinion. Also, the element of her ability as a sketch artist was not utilized nearly as much as I had expected in this story.
There are three chapters in the novel taking place in The Arizona Territory, 1878, which cover the back story of Marshall Ezekiel Drummond as he is on the trail of a serial killer. Or, should I say that there were three chapters which I had expected would cover that back story? At the end of the third chapter we have Marshall Drummond headed to the stable hoping to be allowed to sleep there for the night while his horse rests. Period. End of chapters with the back story about Zeke. Why? Why end his portion of the story like that? As far as I can remember there was never any explanation of how he got from Arizona Territory to Long Island, New York. Very unsatisfactory for me.
And finally, if an author doesn't want me to guess who the guilty party is then they need to include enough other characters so that they keep the guilty party under wraps. Give me multiple choices for who the murderer is. This one really stood out for me and it happened much, much too soon in the novel. There was a slight twist where Ms Pape tried to throw me off, but there was simply nobody else available to be a suspect.
The concept of the novel was interesting. The actual writing of the novel was very good. I don't know if this is the debut novel for this author, but if it was, this was a good start. My main problem was that I didn't enjoy getting to know Rory McCain enough to read the second book in the series. Zeke I liked, but that still wasn't enough for me to spend the time and money to read the second book.

Sketch Me If You Can A Portrait of Crime Mystery Sharon Pape Books Reviews
So-So book one of a new series Portrait of Crime. Aurora (Rory) McCain's uncle dies suddently and she inherits his old Victorian home and private investigation firm. Setting Huntington, Long Island, NY. Rory is currently the sketch artist for a local police department. She also inherits a ghost in her home - federal marshal Zeke Drummond from the 1970's. He assists Rory with her cases.
I don't usually write reviews on books I've read; in fact this is the first. I've rated this three out of five because its a good first book. The characters are interesting and for the most part well played. However at least the version needs a lot of editing and I find this to be extremely distracting when I'm reading. I'm talking about sentences that are ended in the middle and then repeated to finish the thought. barring this flaw it was an interesting and enjoyable read and I'll most likely pick up the next to see how this continues to play out.
I really enjoyed Sketch Me If You Can. It is refreshingly different. I really found the exchanges between a 21st century female and a 19th century male very amusing and fun. The way the two worked together to solve the mystery made sense as to their varied experience in law enforcement. Zeke and Rory are great characters, and I look forward to the next installment of this series.
Sketch Me if You Can is exactly what it is advertised to be, a cozy mystery. What a fabulous title! Although I am not a reader of the genre, I found this novel to be an amusing, light read. The characters are distinct and endearing. The humor is charming. And you gotta love the heroine and her ghost. I look forward to the rest of the series.
I really enjoyed this first in the Portrait of Crime Mysteries. The characters and the mystery were very well thought out. I look forward to reading the second in the series!
Okay, but a little slow at times. Not as much development or enlargement on the characters and interactions.
This reviewer read the series out of order, going backwards to catch up with this , the first. A captivating mystery, well written. The only complaint with the actual writing was the repetition of two sentences, jarring but overcome. Here's where we meet Rory, a police sketch artist, who inherits the home of our beloved uncle. His death appears to be natural, but there's a feeling of skepticism about his demise which will become reality when Rory moves into the house and encounters a resident ghost who had befriended her uncle Mac. He was actually a witness to Mac's murder but hadn't been able to intercede and is unable to give Rory a detailed description of the two men involved. The action accelerates and the case on which Mac, a PI, was working, becomes intricate. There had been a death which he had deemed suspicious although it's now a closed case. Rory picks it up, however, and despite warnings that are not enough for her to back off, continues to investigate. With the unlikely but welcome help from her resident ghost, a long dead Marshal of the old West (with his own interesting story), Rory is able to bring the case to a satisfying end. The very captivating writing as well as interesting character development holds the reader's attention throughout. I look forward to yet another book in this thoroughly delightful series.
